By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Defending champions Port Layola have advanced to their second consecutive Premier League of Belize (PLB) final after defeating Progresso 2-1 in the second leg of the semifinals on Sunday, November 24, at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex in Belize City.
Port Layola secured their spot in the final with a 6-3 aggregate victory, having won the first leg 4-2 in Orange Walk two weeks prior.
The second leg was a hard-fought match which saw the home side prevail.
Curtis Valerio opened the scoring for Port Layola in the 69th minute, giving his team a 1-0 lead. However, Progresso’s Jonard Castillo quickly equalized in the 75th minute, keeping the match on edge. Undeterred, Port Layola regained their advantage when Colombian Andrés Orozco converted a penalty kick in the 85th minute, sealing the 2-1 victory.
Port Layola will now face the San Pedro Pirates in the finals. The Pirates delivered a stunning 2-1 victory over Verdes on Saturday night at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo del Carmen, advancing on a 4-3 aggregate score.
San Pedro last won a national championship in 2019 and are eager to gain another title. But so are the defending champions, Port Layola. This sets the stage for an exciting final which should kick off the coming weekend at San Pedro.
