By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Premier League of Belize returns this weekend as defending champions Verdes FC and last season’s sub‑champions Progresso FC meet on Saturday night at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo del Carmen, a highly anticipated reedition of the 2025 Closing Season Final. Their last championship duel was one of the tightest in recent memory, decided only by a narrow 1–0 Verdes victory on December 13, 2025, after a tense 0–0 first leg in Orange Walk on December 7.
Verdes, coming off a 2-1 comeback win over Port Layola, reclaimed first place in midweek and enter the weekend perfect after five matches. They are also riding high on a remarkable 30‑game undefeated streak dating back to Week 6 of the 2024–2025 Closing Season. Their consistency, defensive discipline, and ability to win close matches have made them the league’s standard‑bearer.
Progresso, now just two points behind, will be looking to regain the top spot and hand Verdes their first defeat in nearly two years. The matchup brings together the league’s two most consistent sides and sets the tone for the second half of the regular season.
