Plans brewing to regulate ‘world’s favorite drug’ with Alcohol Control Bill in Belize

By Aaron Humes: The timing is fortuitous, as the holiday season is getting underway and much of the merriment involves alcohol, colloquially ‘the world’s favorite drug.’

But per Director of Health and Wellness Dr. Melissa Diaz Musa, it does have health effects, many deleterious, such as increased exposure to non-communicable diseases including cancers, hypertension and cirrhosis of the liver.

Societally, excess alcohol use contributes to traffic accidents, domestic violence and crime. 

But should it be regulated? Dr Diaz Musa says that will be the province of a technical working group that will be called to discuss such issues and lay the seeds for an Alcohol Control Bill similar to the Tobacco Control Bill before the House of Representatives.
