By Breaking Belize News Staff: A well-known repeat offender, 44-year-old Kareem Jason Flowers of #47 Vernon Street, Belize City, is back in prison after five old warrants for unpaid fines resurfaced, resulting in a total sentence of seven months.

Flowers, who was released from the Belize Central Prison in February of this year after serving time for unpaid fines, was picked up by police over the weekend and charged for possession of a utensil used to smoke crack cocaine. Police say that on Friday, October 31, Flowers was found with a 3¾-inch metal pipe made or adapted for smoking the drug.

Appearing unrepresented before a Senior Magistrate this morning, Flowers pleaded guilty and was fined $150 plus $5 court costs, with a payment deadline of December 31, 2025. In default, he faces six weeks’ imprisonment.

However, his relief was short-lived. Moments after sentencing, five outstanding warrants surfaced for unpaid fines totaling $2,075 from previous convictions, including handling stolen goods, possession of a pipe, common assault, and traffic offenses.

Flowers appeared stunned, telling the court that had he known the warrants were still active, he would not have pleaded guilty to the new charge. The Senior Magistrate explained that warrants for unpaid fines must be requested by the defendant to be sent to prison once the payment deadlines have expired. In Flowers’ case, no such requests were made, leaving the warrants active despite his earlier incarceration.

The cumulative time owed on the five old warrants adds up to seven months in prison. That sentence will run separately from any future imprisonment for the new conviction, which will only take effect if Flowers fails to pay his $155 fine by the end of December and requests that it be activated after January 1, 2026.

Before being escorted to prison, Flowers asked to retrieve his recently purchased phone but was denied, as inmates cannot take personal items with them. He also told the court he had no relatives’ contact numbers to make arrangements for his belongings.

For now, Flowers’ hope of staying out of jail has once again gone up in smoke.
