By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The Punta Gorda branch of the National Garifuna Council says it will have to scale back parts of its Garifuna Settlement Day celebrations after receiving only $2,000 for this year’s November festivities.

In a social media post, the National Garifuna Council Peini/Punta Gorda Branch acknowledged receiving the $2,000 from the National Garifuna Council. The branch said the money came out of a $60,000 donation the council received from the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) last month.

The branch said it understands that the National Garifuna Council also receives an annual subvention of $60,000, from which the PG branch is usually given $2,900 each year for the November celebrations.

“Unfortunately, NOTHING was received by us this year,” the branch said.

With just a one time allocation of $2,000 out of what it described as a total of $120,000, the branch said some aspects of its celebrations will be significantly curtailed.

Still, the branch said it remains hopeful that other activities will go ahead as normal, and closed its post by wishing everyone a happy Garifuna Settlement Day.

The National Garifuna Council has not publicly responded.
