By Aaron Humes: This past weekend’s violence resulted in a young mother being shot at, but fortunately, she survived to tell the tale. However, her relative, a well-known street figure who previously faced a high-profile murder charge, has died. Police have charged 22-year-old Peter Amado Lara, a resident of Jane Usher Boulevard, Belize City, in connection with these events.
On Tuesday morning, around 9:15 a.m., Lara was escorted to the Belize City Magistrate’s Court where he appeared without legal representation and was read four criminal and indictable offenses. Lara is accused of murdering Mark Anthony Leslie Waight on January 25. He faces a single charge of attempted murder for the attack on Francis Herbert, along with one count of dangerous harm and one count of using deadly means to cause harm. No plea was entered, and given the severity of the offenses, bail was denied. Lara has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison until April 28, 2025. After his arraignment, Lara requested a phone call, which is a right afforded to detainees during their detention.
According to police reports, 24-year-old Waight was standing in front of a yard when gunfire erupted. Police have indicated that there was an argument which escalated into gunfire. In the crossfire, Francis Herbert was also shot. Herbert had previously lost her 5-year-old daughter, Kia Herbert, during an earlier shooting incident, and she is currently in the Intensive Care Unit at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital fighting for her life.
Mark Waight was well-known to police and had made headlines on several occasions. He was the father of a 3-month-old baby. Notably, in 2019, Waight was acquitted of two serious charges. In June 2019, he was found not guilty of murdering Amandala journalist Kareem Clarke, and in December 2019, he was acquitted of an attempted murder charge from 2015.
