By Zoila Palma: On Friday, September 29, 1950, the People’s United Party was formed as a peaceful, constructive Belizean revolution.
The motto “Serve the People” became the marching orders and underlying principle upon which the party was founded.
Today, Monday, September 29, 2025, the PUP celebrates its 75th birthday.
On Sunday, more than 1000 PUP leaders, delegates and supporters from across the country convened for the National Party Council in Orange Walk Town.
The theme for this year’s celebration was, “PUP @ 75, Serving the People, Continuing the Revolution.
The highlight of the National Party Council was inspirational speeches by the Deputy Party Leader, Cordel Hyde and by the Party Leader and Prime Minister, John Briceno.
As a part of the celebration, 13 enthusiastic young people were awarded the Youth Award, 32 long standing supporters were awarded the George Price Service to the People Award, and 12 women who contested for the PUP in General Elections were awarded the Gwen Lizarraga Award.
The Hon Samuel Waight was awarded the highest award in the Party, the Party Leader’s Award.
To culminate the event, the Order of Distinguished Service were especially recognized for their long-standing service to the Party and Country in beautiful pinning ceremony.
Party Chairman Henry Usher officially swore in the party’s new Secretary General Collet Montejo.
“The Party has every confidence that the PUP Secretariat under his leadership will uphold the constitution, aims and objectives of the party, ensuring that we remain humble, committed and focused on delivering dedicated service to the people of Belize,” the PUP said.
The PUP thanked all supporters and sympathizers for their continued support and renewed commitment to “honoring the legacy of our past leaders, focusing on the task at hand, and forging a future for our people for generations to come. Long Live the People’s United Party, Long Live Belize”
