By Breaking Belize News Staff: Patrick Robinson, 44, owner of Leiva’s Funeral Parlour, was sentenced to 14 years in prison for three counts of unlawful sexual intercourse (USI) with a minor. The sentencing was handed down by High Court Justice Derick Sylvester, following Robinson’s conviction on March 21, 2025.
Robinson was initially indicted on five counts of USI, with allegations spanning the victim’s age from 11 to 14. However, Justice Sylvester found him not guilty of counts 1 and 2, which pertained to incidents when the victim was 11 years old. The court determined that while the victim was credible, there may have been a mistake in her recollection of the specific dates for those earlier counts.
The guilty convictions, for which Robinson will serve time, relate to three instances of unlawful sexual intercourse with the victim when she was 13 and 14 years old, occurring in February, June, and August of 2022.
Justice Sylvester imposed a 7-year sentence for each of the three guilty counts (Counts 3, 4, and 5). He ruled that Counts 3 and 4 would run concurrently, meaning Robinson serves 7 years for those two. However, Count 5 was ordered to run consecutively with Counts 3 and 4, resulting in a total prison term of 14 years.
The judge ordered that Robinson’s remand time of 122 days be deducted from his sentence, taking effect from his conviction date of March 31, 2025.
In delivering the sentence, Justice Sylvester considered the prescribed minimum and maximum terms for the offense, which range from 5 to 10 years. He highlighted several aggravating factors, including Robinson’s breach of trust with the victim, the significant harm caused, and his complete lack of remorse. The judge also noted that defense witnesses presented untrustworthy testimony, which was rejected by the court, while the victim was found to be an honest and credible witness.
Throughout his trial, Robinson, represented by attorneys Hubert Elrington and Norman Rodriguez, maintained his innocence, denying all allegations and testifying under oath. He is reportedly appealing his conviction.
