By Horace Palacio: In a recent Facebook post, Patrick Faber, the former leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), made a bold statement against the party’s current leadership, calling for the leader “to go.” Faber’s post, published a short while ago, strongly criticizes the party’s leader, Moses ‘Shyne’ Barrow.
“I do not support dictatorship and censorship! If I’m unable to say how I feel in the party’s internal structures, I’ll say it here loud and clear! I don’t support the dictator, convicted criminal leader of the UDP and he must go,” Faber declared in his post.
Faber’s outcry highlights the internal conflicts within the UDP, which have intensified since the party lost the recent by-elections in Toledo by a huge margin. His statements reflect continued dissension within the UDP and a call for change by some within the party’s hierarchy.
However, a change in UDP leadership via a recall mechanism appears virtually impossible at this time. The national convention voted unanimously to re-elect Shyne Barrow on August 13, 2023, and further decided that there would be no more leadership conventions until after the next general elections. Supporters of Barrow also say he continues to enjoy the support of a majority of standard bearers in the party, and nothing has changed since the national convention elected him twice.
Will Patrick Faber be sanctioned for clearly going against a recent resolution to not speak negatively in public against the party?
The response from the party and its leadership remains to be seen, but this development undoubtedly marks a pivotal moment in Belizean politics, with potential implications for the UDP’s unity heading into the next general elections.
