By Breaking Belize News Staff: After spending two nights on remand and a total of four days in detention, Pastor Mark Anthony Humes, a taxi operator from Burrell Boom Village, is now a free man. The charge of possession with intent to supply 1,137 grams of cocaine, which was filed against him, was officially withdrawn on Friday morning.
Shortly before 10:00 a.m., Humes, accompanied by his attorney, Dr. Lynden Jones, walked out of court to be greeted by his relieved wife and supporters. His wife was heard saying, “Thank you, Lord,” as she embraced him upon his release.
While Pastor Humes refrained from commenting on the case, his attorney explained that the Belize Police Department conducted further investigations and, based on their findings, decided to withdraw the charge against him. However, the charge still stands against his six co-accused, who remain on remand at the Belize Central Prison, awaiting bail at the High Court.
The six fishermen from northern Belize—Lerman Norman Leslie, 31, of Chunox Village; Freddy Estuardo Chavez, 43, of San Estevan; Angel Aragon, 44, of Sarteneja Village; Marvin Teul, 35, of Sarteneja Village; Ronyer Alexander Cruz, 24, of Sarteneja Village; and Christian Merilyn White, 38—were arrested along with Humes during a drug bust in Orange Walk Town on March 18, 2025.
Police reports state that at around 7:00 p.m. that evening, officers from the Mobile Interdiction Team (MIT) and the Highway Interdiction Team (HIT) intercepted a gold Dodge Caravan being driven by Pastor Humes. Authorities say Humes had been hired to transport the fishermen from Belize City to Orange Walk when the vehicle was stopped before reaching its destination.
The detained fishermen have reportedly sought legal representation through Senior Crown Counsel Simeon Sampson, who has begun their bail application process.
