By Aaron Humes: A pastor was killed while driving on the Thomas Vincent Ramos (Southern) Highway between miles 37 and 38 on Saturday morning just before 5 a.m. in the area of San Juan (Cowpen).
Responding police found a damaged wooden house dislodged from the transport trailer and a blue passenger van about 800 feet away in a pine ridge containing 53-year-old Julian Bol and a minor, 13, who had no injuries; Bol was apparently already deceased.
According to police, around 4:35 a.m. a convoy including the trailer was headed south toward Independence village when they saw a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction. The driver of the lead vehicle tried to signal the opposing driver by blinking his lights, but the vehicle kept coming and collided with the structure, sending it off the road into the pine ridge.
Police have impounded the vehicles and will inspect them as part of their ongoing investigation into the specific cause of the accident and who, if anyone, will be charged.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith said that with regard to carrying such “wide loads,” “Generally speaking, when you are issued with a wide load permit, there is a requirement for there to be a lead vehicle as well as a rear vehicle, and both of these vehicles must have flashing lights and they must be at a distance [to] suitably indicate [to] persons who are oncoming or who are behind that a wide load is being carried; also, the wide load itself should have several features that makes it very noticeable from a distance.”
