By Breaking Belize News Staff: Jaz Dpaz, a parent of a student at Bishop Martin R.C. School in San Ignacio has taken to social media to call on the Ministry of Education to address ongoing issues at the school.
“As a parent, I can no longer stay silent, I am concerned and disappointed by the ongoing mistreatment of students at Bishop Martin R.C. School in San Ignacio. What used to be a respected institution has now become a place of neglect, disrespect, and chaos.
Too many children are being bullied, shouted at, hit, and called hurtful names by teachers,- behavior that no child should ever endure at school but this actions are totally accepted by the principals because they behave the same way,” Dpaz said.
In addition, the parent claims that the issues were brought to the Principal and to the Ministry of Education office in Santa Elena, Cayo.
“The Ministry of Education office in Santa Elena has failed us, ignoring our complaints and allowing this broken system. Many parents have already removed their children from Bishop Martin R.C. School because of these very issues. The most heartbreaking part is how children with disabilities are treated—as if they are less, as if they don’t belong. It pains us deeply. The *security guards*, who supposed to ensure our children’s safety, are constantly distracted—either caught up in personal conversations, scrolling on their phone, or playing the role of “dance teacher” or “sport Coach” instead of doing their actual job. Children meanwhile get injured often without anyone noticing or caring,” Dpaz added.
Dpaz says that the school community more feels like a business and many families are facing financial struggles which should be considered.
“And let’s not ignore the financial pressure placed on us as parents. Bishop Martin R.C. School is one of the most expensive schools in the area, we already pay $280 and up per child —yet we are constantly PRESSURED to buy or sell raffle tickets or contribute to fundraisers. There’s no room for discussion or understanding,” Dpaz explained.
Dpaz says that parents are ready to sign a petition for the removal of the principal and vice principal.
