By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Freedom Street resident, 32-year-old Michael Martinez, found himself back before the Chief Magistrate on Tuesday morning after admitting to stealing two panties from his ex-girlfriend’s clothesline, an act he claimed was driven by his intention to use them for “obeah.”
According to police reports, Martinez was caught red-handed last Thursday, October 30, when his ex-girlfriend saw him removing clothing from her line on Pelican Street. The woman told police that shortly after the theft, Martinez called her and said, “Yes B, I have yuh panty. I nuh fraid feh yuh, I wah kill yuh. I wah use yuh panty feh obeah yuh.”
In court, Martinez pleaded guilty to stealing two panties—one black and one purple—valued at $24 total. The Chief Magistrate fined him $505, ordering him to pay $200 forthwith before being released. Martinez cleared that amount by 3:00 p.m. and walked free, but he must pay the remaining $300 by January 31, 2026, or face two months’ imprisonment.
During the hearing, Martinez initially claimed he had no reason to steal the panties but maintained his guilty plea, saying he did not want to waste the court’s time. The Chief Magistrate noted that he was fortunate not to be charged for threatening words, given the nature of his comments to Petillo.
This marks Martinez’s 15th criminal conviction, including previous offenses for theft, common assault, and threatening words. Court records also show that in July 2024, he was charged for stealing a towel from the same ex-girlfriend’s clothesline.
Police apprehended Martinez on Saturday, November 1, after investigating the ex-girlfriend’s report. His fine, the Chief Magistrate said, reflected his long history of repeated offenses—making his $24 theft one of the most expensive panty heists in Belize City.
