By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Leader of the Opposition Tracy Taegar Panton says Belize’s response to crime must go beyond enforcement and include mental health support, conflict resolution and new opportunities for vulnerable communities.
Panton addressed public safety as part of her Independence Day message, saying violent crime and road traffic accidents continue to take too many productive lives.
She also pointed to security concerns affecting Belize’s border communities.
Rather than focusing solely on temporary enforcement measures, Panton called for what she described as effective policing and accessible justice alongside social interventions.
Her proposed approach included mental health services, conflict resolution programmes and opportunities for vulnerable and marginalized Belizeans.
The Opposition Leader linked public safety to a wider argument that Belize must reassess its national priorities after 45 years of Independence.
She also addressed education and health care, welcoming the MCC Compact’s investment in education and technical training while calling for educators to help shape reforms.
On health care, Panton said National Health Insurance could help move Belize toward broader coverage but argued that its expansion should be accompanied by transparency and accountability while public hospitals and community health facilities continue receiving attention.
Her broader message called for what she described as national renewal and stronger citizen involvement in Belize’s development.
