By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Opposition Leader Tracy Panton wants Commissioner of Police Dr. Richard Rosado out of office.
In a social media post on Saturday evening, Panton said public trust in the Belize Police Department will not be restored without urgent action and accountability. She accused the department’s leadership of corruption and abuse of authority and was blunt in her conclusion.
“It is time for Rosado to go,” she wrote.
Her call came hours after Rosado and National Security Minister Michel Chebat sat down with gang affiliated individuals, mediators and police officers at the House of Culture in Belize City on Saturday morning. The meeting followed Friday’s killing of four men on the Coastal Highway.
Panton took aim at the mediation itself, pointing out that the PUP had strongly opposed similar talks during its 13 years in Opposition. She also noted that gunfire continued to ring out in Belize City while the talks were underway and again that night.
She questioned where the coordinated law enforcement response government had promised was, adding that dialogue may help but cannot replace solid policing, credible investigations and accountability.
Neither the Commissioner nor the Ministry of National Security has responded publicly to her call.
