Panton: Belizeans deserve answers on fuel price spike

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Leader of the Opposition Tracy Taegar Panton is calling on the Government of Belize to provide a clear explanation for the recent increase in fuel prices at the pump.

In a statement issued on March 13, Panton said Belizeans deserve transparency and accountability from an administration that previously promised higher standards of governance.

Panton noted that global crude oil prices were fluctuating around US$95 to US$100 per barrel, but emphasized that Belize primarily imports refined petroleum products from Mexico and the United States rather than from regions affected by current international conflicts.

She said this reality requires the government to explain the specific factors that led to the sharp increase in local pump prices.

The opposition leader also questioned whether the government had explored potential regional fuel supply options, including cooperation with Guyana, which is currently CARICOM’s largest oil producer.

Panton further called on the government to outline policies that would help cushion Belizean families from the rising cost of energy and its wider economic impact.
