By Zoila Palma: The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MoHW), has launched a new initiative to strengthen diabetes prevention and care in Belize. Funded by the World Diabetes Foundation (WDF), the project aims to improve diabetes management by integrating diabetes services into the country’s primary healthcare system, ensuring that care is more accessible and effective across all communities.
As part of the Diabetes Care Integration Project, PAHO/WHO and the MoHW conducted site visits to rural and urban health centers to assess current practices and identify ways to enhance diabetes care. These visits allowed the team to observe how local health facilities manage diabetes patients, identify service gaps, and gather valuable insights to guide national strategies for improving chronic disease care.
A key component of the project was a national diabetes care workshop that brought together more than 40 healthcare professionals, including pharmacists, primary care coordinators, administrators, and internists.
The workshop focused on building local capacity in diabetes management and included discussions on the Global Diabetes Pact, an international initiative to strengthen diabetes care. Participants worked collaboratively to design a clinical pathway tailored to Belize’s health system, aimed at improving treatment outcomes for people living with type 2 diabetes and other non-communicable diseases.
Through this partnership, PAHO/WHO, WDF, and the MoHW seek to reduce the burden of diabetes, prevent complications, and improve the quality of life for Belizeans affected by the disease.
By integrating diabetes care into primary healthcare services, the initiative ensures that communities across Belize have better access to early detection, continuous care, and prevention strategies.
PAHO reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Belize in building a stronger, more resilient healthcare system capable of providing sustainable solutions to chronic health challenges.
