The Creole Pig: Haiti’s Great Loss will be screened at the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) on August 14, 2025, from 6:00 to 9:30pm. As part of PAMM’s Caribbean Cultural Institute programming, filmmaker Dudley Alexis will present the film, followed by a discussion with artist Edouard Duval-Carrié and FIU Professor Chantalle F. Verna. [The screening and conversation coincide with the commemoration of the 235th anniversary of the Bois Caïman ceremony.] Attendance is free with museum admission. Remember to RSVP.
Description: This film tells the story of the Creole pig, a vital and resilient animal in Haitian rural life, and the devastating impact of its mass extermination in the 1980s. Following a swine flu outbreak, the Haitian government—under pressure from USDA—slaughtered the entire population, dealing a major economic blow to an already struggling nation. Through interviews with farmers, economists, educators, and political analysts, the film explores the far-reaching political, economic, and cultural consequences of this loss for the Haitian people.
After the program, enjoy post-film discussion and libations in Little Haiti. Stop at Lakou for drinks and bites for purchase, visit the gallery at IPC ArtSpace, and don’t miss the studio of Edouard Duval-Carrié.
