By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The controversy surrounding the 2026 Belikin La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge continues to intensify, as founders and paddlers voice concern over what they describe as the race losing its original purpose.
At its inception, La Ruta Maya was designed to promote the health and protection of the Belize River while highlighting the culture and history of river communities. However, critics now argue that the event has become overly commercialized.
Speaking publicly, Luis Garcia, co-founder of La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge, reflected on the race’s early years, explaining that the original goal was to showcase Belize’s history, environment, and river culture while fostering environmental awareness.
Garcia noted that after early safety concerns, organizers moved the race finish back to the Belcan Bridge to maintain both safety and cultural relevance. He emphasized that the race was always intended to spotlight the importance of the Belize River and encourage community-driven initiatives such as river cleanups and environmental preservation.
