By Zoila Palma: More than 30 cultural and creative practitioners gathered at the Bliss Centre on Saturday for a national workshop led by the National Team for the National Strategy and Roadmap for the Cultural and Creative Sector (NSAR–CCS).
Participants represented a wide range of sub-sectors, including music, dance, film, theatre, handicraft, fashion, festivals and heritage, reflecting the diversity of Belize’s cultural landscape.
The workshop began with a diagnostic update from Dr. Deborah Hickling, followed by structured discussions focused on key thematic areas: Education and Skills Training, Business and Enterprise Development, and Governance and Infrastructure.
Later in the afternoon, attendees joined an introductory session on the Creative Economy, exploring how the sector functions, its role in national development, and core concepts such as the creative ecosystem and value chains. The session aimed to strengthen sector capacity and ensure meaningful participation in shaping future cultural policy.
This initiative forms part of Belize’s ongoing efforts to advance its cultural and creative policy framework, aligning with global commitments reaffirmed at MONDIACULT 2025 in Spain.
Supported by the UNESCO–EU Programme on evidence-based cultural policy development, Belize remains one of the few countries in the region actively pushing this agenda forward.
