By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Home Affairs Minister Oscar Mira has responded to allegations that members of his family benefited from government contracts, maintaining that he had no involvement in the procurement process and was unaware of any decisions relating to the awarding of contracts.
Speaking publicly on the matter for the first time, Mira explained that procurement decisions are handled through established government procedures and committees, not by ministers.
According to Mira, tenders are publicly advertised and open to anyone who wishes to apply. He noted that applications are reviewed through a formal process and emphasized that he has never sat on a procurement committee or attempted to influence one.
The minister said that if family members received contracts, they would have gone through the same application process available to any other Belizean business or individual seeking government work.
Mira stressed that his responsibilities as minister focus on policy and the administration of his ministry, not on procurement or financial approvals.
When questioned about reports that some payments may have been structured below the threshold requiring Treasury oversight, Mira acknowledged that such allegations would naturally raise concerns.
However, he said he was unable to determine whether any wrongdoing occurred and stated that he had no knowledge of the details surrounding those transactions.
“I do not think that anyone wouldn’t be concerned,” Mira said, while adding that he did not know whether anything illegal had taken place.
The minister also acknowledged that the controversy has created negative public perceptions and admitted that there are lessons to be learned from the situation.
Despite the scrutiny, Mira maintained that he had no role in awarding contracts and no involvement in procurement decisions throughout his time in government service.
The issue continues to attract public attention as questions remain about government procurement practices and oversight procedures.
