By Delroy Cuthkelvin : As the new Party Leader Honorable Tracy Panton characterizes it, this Sunday’s National Convention for the United Democratic Party is “the Great Reset”, and it is long overdue, a feeling shared not only by UDP supporters, but by all right thinking Belizeans who believe in an effective democracy, a principal component of which is a functioning, formidable Opposition.
Excitement has been mounting over the past couple months in anticipation of the National Convention which we all believe will restore stability, viability and militancy to the Party as it takes on an administration that has demonstrably lost it way, and which appears to be on the brink of a catastrophic collapse.
Under these circumstances, it is critical and imperative for the UDP to get itself ready at the earliest to take charge of the nation’s affairs, as the Party had been called upon to do in the past when the nation found itself in similar crisis situations under previous PUP administrations.
One of the most regrettable effects of the persistent UDP infighting and factionalism during the past five years has been the fact that the essential work of organizing the Party in all constituencies countrywide has been severely neglected. We won’t revisit at this stage the question of whose fault it was. There is plenty of blame to go around. What’s inescapable is that the work must be done now, and it must be executed with utmost urgency and laser focus.
That is why the task of choosing a new National Chairman for the Party is such an important one. In this respect, the Party must trust the collective wisdom of its delegates representing all constituencies countrywide, as well as the various arms of the organization. We all want the best for our Party, and we must respect each other’s view and choice on the matter.
As I previously explained, my reason for throwing my support behind Roosevelt Blades for the position is that I believe he has over the past couple decades proven himself at all levels as one of the very best organizers the Party has. Let me further emphasize that, if ever there was a time the Party needed a Chairman who’s greatest strength is the ability to organize, that time is now.
I must hasten to add that Senator Sheena Pitts is also a woman of outstanding ability and competence, as demonstrated by her superb performance in the Senate and other public forums where she skilfully and surgically takes the fight to the ruling government on the issues that matter most to the nation and people of Belize. She will certainly continue to do so with the brilliance and courage she has exhibited and established.
So, on Sunday, let us come together with the fellowship and festivity that the moment calls for. But let us also focus on the momentous mission to which we are summoned, which is to commence the herculean task of rescuing the nation and preparing to manage the affairs of the people. The only way to do so is to restore and reinforce the institutional capacity of our Party nationwide.
As the new Party Leader Honorable Tracy Panton puts it, we must rebuild our Party brick by brick. All hands on deck!
