By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The FFB President Clash of the North Championship kicks off this weekend, bringing together the best football talent from Orange Walk and Corozal. The Orange Walk Football Association will face off against the Corozal Football Association in a showdown that promises thrilling matches over the next three weekends.
The Clash of the North Championship will feature four top clubs battling for the title of Northern Champions. Representing Orange Walk are Yo Creek United FC, the reigning OWFA champions, and San Jose Pumas FC, the subchampions. Corozal enters the competition with their champions Sarteneja FC and subchampions Calcutta Bulls FC.
The tournament’s prize purse stands at $3,000. FFB President Sergio Chuc has contributed $1,000, while Orange Walk Mayor Ladrick Sheppard and Corozal Football Association Chairman Mario Casanova have each added $500. Additionally, Orange Walk Mayor Ladrick Sheppard and Corozal Mayor Rigo Vellos are contributing $500 each to round out the total prize.
The competition format ensures every match produces a winner. A victory in regular time will earn three points, a win in extra time will grant two points, and a win via penalties will secure one point.
The first weekend of action will be held in Orange Walk, likely at Louisiana Football Field, on Sunday, June 1, with opening matches scheduled as follows:
- San Jose Pumas taking on Calcutta Bulls at 2:00 pm
- Yo Creek United FC facing Sarteneja FC at 4:00 pm
The following week, on Sunday, June 8, the games shift to Carolina Football Field in Corozal, where:
- San Jose Pumas will battle Sarteneja FC
- Calcutta Bulls will face Yo Creek United FC
After the second round of games, the top two teams will advance to the final, which will be hosted at the venue of the team that finishes at the top of the standings.
