By Zoila Palma: Orange Walk resident Abdel Mai has achieved a major academic milestone, earning his Master’s Degree in Agroforestry and Sustainable Agriculture from the prestigious Centro Agronómico Tropical de Investigación y Enseñanza (CATIE) in Costa Rica.
His accomplishment has drawn pride from his family and community, particularly his father, Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, José Abelardo Mai.
“I thank God for giving us the opportunity to see my youngest son, Abdel Mai, earn his MSc in Agroforestry and Sustainable Agriculture from CATIE in Costa Rica. Congrats, Abdel!” Minister Mai expressed. “As an agent of change, his preparation now provides him the opportunity to impact livelihoods and provide alternative opportunities and solutions for many who depend on the agriculture sector,” he added.
Minister Mai also took the time to thank those who supported Abdel during his academic journey.
“We thank all those who in some way or the other assisted in the field research while in Belize,” he said. “To his close friends of the Agriculture Department who provided advice and guidance in data collection and who many times assisted — Sergio Hernandez and Vasny Wesby and his team, El Profe Adan Velasquez, Docio Carrillo, Esco Carrillo, and Fernie. To Elbert Cowo for laboratory support — your contribution played a significant role. To our farm neighbors, Hector Novelo, Uriel Carrillo, and Alex Gutierrez, thanks for always encouraging Abdel to work hard and smart. My family and I are grateful for your assistance.”
Reflecting on the deeper meaning of education, Minister Mai shared a heartfelt message with his son. “Important to remember, education does not get us smarter — it gets us wiser. Maintain your humility, hard work, and diligence, Abdel. God will bless you,” he advised.
