By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Clash of the North Championship kicks off this Sunday, June 1, bringing together premier football talent from Orange Walk and Corozal in an electrifying contest. The Orange Walk Football Association will face off against the Corozal Football Association in a three-week showdown where the winners will earn $2,000 and the second-place team will receive $1,000.
The championship will feature four top clubs battling for the title of Northern Champions. Yo Creek United FC, the reigning OWFA champions, and San Jose Pumas FC, the subchampions represent the Orange Walk FA. Corozal enters the fray with their champions, Sarteneja FC, and subchampions, Calcutta Bulls FC.
The tournament’s prize purse has been structured to reward excellence, with the champions pocketing $2,000 and the runners-up $1,000. This prize pool has been made possible by generous contributions: FFB President Sergio Chuc contributed $1,000, while Orange Walk Mayor Ladrick Sheppard and Corozal Football Association Chairman Mario Casanova each added $500. In addition, both Orange Walk Mayor Ladrick Sheppard and Corozal Mayor Rigo Vellos contributed $500 each to complete the total prize setup.
The competition format ensures that every match produces a winner. A victory in regular time will earn three points, a win in extra time will grant two points, and a win via penalties will secure one point.

The first weekend of action will be held in Orange Walk at Louisiana Football Field on Sunday, June 1, with the opening matches scheduled as follows:
• Yo Creek United FC facing Sarteneja FC at 2:00 pm
• San Jose Pumas taking on Calcutta Bulls at 4:00 pm
The following Sunday, June 8, the action shifts to Carolina Football Field in Corozal, where:
• San Jose Pumas will battle Sarteneja FC
• Calcutta Bulls will face Yo Creek United FC
After the second round of games, the top two teams will advance to the final, hosted at the home venue of the team topping the standings.
Last year, Guinea Grass FC of Orange Walk clinched the Mayor’s Cup, setting the stage for another fierce competition this year as the region’s finest compete for glory and cash prizes.
