By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Orange Walk Association of Football Referees (OWAFR) is calling on passionate football enthusiasts to step into the game from a new angle — the referee’s whistle.
Wilson ‘Chato’ Perez, a seasoned referee sanctioned by the Football Federation of Belize, announced that the Association’s latest recruitment drive kicks off this Thursday, August 28 at 5:00 pm at the Louisiana Football Field in Orange Walk Town. The initiative aims to bolster the pool of trained referees in the northern region, with Perez emphasizing that the program is open to individuals aged 15 and older.
Perez said they’re looking for people who love the game and want to contribute to its growth.
Refereeing is not just about enforcing rules — it’s about understanding the rhythm of the match, respecting the players, and maintaining fairness.
Training sessions will be held once a week, offering recruits a structured path to certification and eventual match assignments. The OWAFR hopes to attract both youth and adults who are eager to learn and serve the sport.
Perez noted that the recruitment drive is part of a broader effort to ensure that local matches — from grassroots tournaments to Premier League fixtures — are officiated with professionalism and consistency.
Interested individuals are encouraged to attend Thursday’s session in athletic wear and bring a notebook. No prior experience is required — just a willingness to learn and a respect for the game.
