By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Orange Walk Association of Football Referees (OWAFR) officially launches its referee recruitment drive on Thursday evening, inviting football enthusiasts to take on a new role in the sport — as match officials.
Wilson ‘Chato’ Perez, a referee accredited by the Football Federation of Belize, said the initiative begins today, Thursday, August 28, at 5:00 pm at the Louisiana Football Field in Orange Walk Town. The program is open to individuals aged 15 and older, with no prior experience required.
Refereeing is more than enforcing rules — it’s about reading the game, respecting players, and ensuring fairness. To that end the OWAFR is looking for people who love football and want to help it grow.
Training sessions will be held weekly, guiding recruits through the fundamentals of officiating and preparing them for certification and match assignments. OWAFR aims to build a stronger pool of referees to serve competitions across the northern district, from youth to higher level tournaments.
The drive is part of a broader push to elevate the standard of officiating in Belizean football. Interested participants should arrive in athletic wear and bring a notebook.
