By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 25-year-old man from San Felipe Village, Orange Walk, is now serving a total of 10 months and 2 weeks in prison after being convicted on multiple charges in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court.

Maribello Hilberto Gonzalez appeared late Friday evening before a Senior Magistrate in Court #6, where he pleaded guilty to damage to property and breach of a protection order. He was brought to Belize City for arraignment due to the absence of a sitting magistrate in Orange Walk.

According to court documents, the incident occurred on April 8, 2025, when Gonzalez, under the influence of alcohol, damaged several household items including a Mabe refrigerator valued at $1,000, two plastic chairs worth $70, and a brown basket valued at $20. These items belonged to a relative.

Gonzalez also violated a protection order issued by the Orange Walk Magistrate’s Court on March 11, 2025, which was to remain in effect for one year. Despite the order, Gonzalez entered his mother’s home, claiming she had given him permission to come and eat food and wash his clothes.

In his mitigation plea, Gonzalez admitted he was drunk during the incident and claimed a confrontation with his brother-in-law triggered the outburst. He asked the court for leniency and a chance to pay a fine. However, the court noted that Gonzalez is not a first-time offender, having previous convictions for both damage to property and breach of a protection order.

As a result, the Senior Magistrate sentenced Gonzalez to 6 months for damage to property (after deductions for early guilty plea); 7 months and 2 weeks for breach of protection order (also reduced for early plea).

Both sentences are to run concurrently, meaning he will serve 7 months and 2 weeks.

However, Gonzalez also failed to pay a previous fine of $505 from a conviction in Orange Walk for damage to property. This resulted in an additional 3 months imprisonment, to run consecutively, bringing his total time behind bars to 10 months and 2 weeks.

He also has another outstanding fine of $305 for drug possession, but since time remains for payment, no arrest warrant was issued for that case.
