By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Progresso FC cruised into the semifinals of the Orange Walk Football Association 2024-2025 1st Division Closing Championship with a 3-0 victory over Guinea Grass FC in their quarterfinal second leg at Louisiana Football Field on Sunday, April 27, 2025. However, the match took an unexpected turn, as Guinea Grass FC were unable to complete the match, forcing a stoppage in the 40th minute.
Progresso, already holding a 5-0 advantage from the first leg, wasted no time in asserting their dominance. Jareth Tablada found the net twice in the 11th and 29th minutes, followed by a strike from Nestor “Chelito” Heredia in the 30th minute, sealing their 3-0 win.
Guinea Grass FC, already disadvantaged by starting the game with only nine players, suffered further setbacks when a player received a red card in the 30th minute. Another frustrated player walked off, reducing the squad to seven—the minimum required to continue a match under official regulations.
Although the game continued for another ten minutes, another Guinea Grass player reported an injury and was unable to continue, leaving them with just six players. With Guinea Grass unable to meet the minimum requirement of seven, the referee was forced to call off the match.
Progresso FC, undefeated in the tournament, advanced to the semifinals with an 8-0 aggregate and will now face San Jose Pumas on May 4 at 5:00 p.m.
