By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Defending champions Yo Creek United head into Sunday’s Orange Walk Football Association (OWFA) 2024-2025 Amateur 1st Division Closing Championship Final facing a tough test. With three of their key defenders suspended, Yo Creek United arrive at Louisiana Football Field at 3:30 p.m. undermanned, as they prepare to battle a determined San Jose Pumas squad eager to capitalize on their weakened backline.

A Battle of Rivals

This final marks a repeat of the Opening Championship, where Yo Creek United triumphed over San Jose Pumas with a dramatic 5-3 victory on December 15, 2024. However, this time, San Jose Pumas are focused on flipping the script. With Yo Creek United missing Luis Chi, Juan Diaz, and Amilcar Jones—three crucial figures in their defensive setup—San Jose Pumas see an opportunity to press their advantage and claim the title.

Road to the Final

Despite their setbacks, Yo Creek United prevailed in their semifinal against Mi Gente. Although they lost the second leg 2-1, their 5-4 aggregate victory ensured their place in the final. The absences of Chi, Diaz, and Jones, suspended due to alleged racial abuse in the first leg, forced Yo Creek United to adapt their defensive strategies.

Meanwhile, San Jose Pumas fought their way to the final with a gutsy 2-1 comeback win over Progresso FC. Giovanni Marin’s stoppage-time goal and Victor Novelo’s extra-time winner secured their place in the championship showdown after a 0-0 first-leg draw. With confidence high, San Jose Pumas will look to exploit Yo Creek United’s vulnerabilities and seize their long-awaited revenge.

With emotions running high, this OWFA Final promises to be a fiery contest. San Jose Pumas will aim to take full advantage of Yo Creek United’s perceived weakness, while the reigning champions will rely on their remaining talent and experience to fight for back-to-back titles.

The OWFA expects fans to flood Louisiana Football Field for the big match, with entrance priced at $7.00.

Incidentally, a poll by the OWFA, up to 1:00 pm on Saturday, May 17, favoured Yo Creek to repeat (55% to 45%).
