By Rubén Morales Iglesias: San Jose Pumas secured their place in the Orange Walk Football Association (OWFA) Amateur 1st Division Championship Final, overcoming Progresso FC with a dramatic 2-1 victory at People’s Stadium on Sunday. The Pumas advanced on goal average after their 0-0 draw in the first leg, setting up a second final against reigning champions Yo Creek United.
Progresso FC struck first, taking the lead in the 27th minute through Bryce Lawrence, putting pressure on San Jose Pumas to respond. The match remained tense, with neither side able to break through again until the closing stages.
Just as it seemed Progresso would hold on, Giovanni Marin leveled the score in stoppage time (90+ minute), forcing overtime. In extra time, San Jose Pumas completed their comeback with Victor Novelo netting the winner in the 100th minute, sealing their ticket to the final.
A familiar championship matchup
San Jose Pumas will now prepare to face Yo Creek United in the final on May 18, a rematch of the Opening Championship Final. Yo Creek advanced despite falling 2-2 to Mi Gente, securing their place on a 5-4 aggregate score.
With both teams eager to claim the championship title, fans can expect an intense battle when the final kicks off at the Louisiana Football Field next Sunday.
