Orange Walk District takes a foot of rain in first major activity of hurricane season

By Aaron Humes: Chief Meteorologist Ronald Gordon says measurements by the National Meteorological Service (NMS) showed that the Orange Walk District took the brunt of last week’s rainfall event – at least a foot of rain.

The weather station at Tower Hill measured 330 millimeters (12.99 inches) of rainfall between Wednesday and Saturday, while the one at Douglas measured 321 millimeters (12.64 inches). Most of the rain came between Friday and Saturday morning.

“It started off, I would say, around Wednesday when we had a tropical wave cross the country, and that was followed by another tropical wave on Friday, which was more active. That system eventually moved across the country, and an area of low pressure formed on it just to the west of Belize, and eventually it moved west-northwestward over the Bay of Campeche, where it became Tropical Depression 2, and eventually was upgraded to Tropical Storm Barry,” Gordon reported. The storm made landfall in eastern Mexico and has since dissipated.

In Belize, conditions rapidly improved after mid-morning Saturday, and generally fair conditions are expected through at least Tuesday. However, another tropical wave is approaching and will near Belize’s coast on Tuesday, bringing more rainfall, though not as much as last week’s event due to less favourable conditions for development.

National Emergency Coordinator Daniel Mendez, representing the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO), said damage assessment teams are on the ground, as are those from the relief and supplies management committee are delivering additional supplies to affected families.

“We will be looking at what happened and ensuring that we can address any issue that appears over the next few days,” said Mendez, adding that NEMO has been supported by the Met and National Hydrological Service (NHS).

Nonetheless, there were complaints that not enough notice was given through official channels. Mendez said warnings were issued through the daily flood forecasts issued by the NHS, but allowed that they will review how they communicate on such issues.
