Opposition warns against secret telecom deal

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Opposition Leader Tracy Taegar Panton is raising serious concerns over the proposed acquisition involving BTL, SMART, and local cable providers, calling on Belizeans to demand full transparency and disclosure.

In a strongly worded statement, Panton questioned whether the deal is genuinely aimed at strengthening Belize’s telecommunications sector or if it represents another example of secrecy and alleged self-dealing by the government. She warned that hundreds of millions of dollars in public assets could be moved behind closed doors while Belizean families continue to struggle with rising living costs.

Panton pointed to a pattern of major spending decisions made without public consultation, saying the proposed deal comes at a time when many households are barely making ends meet. She described the situation as tone-deaf and unacceptable, arguing that Belizeans deserve clear answers and the plain truth.

“If this deal is legitimate, then there should be nothing to hide,” Panton said, stressing that public trust is eroded when decisions of national importance are made in secrecy.
