By Aaron Humes: While this week’s hearings of the Senate Special Select Committee postponed to February 14, the Opposition United Democratic Party reiterates that former UDP ministers being called to testify and particularly former Minister of Lands Hugo Patt “is a waste of time and abuse of power.”
It cites the terms of reference for the Committee does not mention land transactions and nor does the Definitive Agreement.
In the opinion of the Opposition, it is Prime Minister John Briceno who should be summoned to explain why he chose to bring the Agreement and accompanying legislation to be approved for passage in the National Assembly despite an adverse opinion from King’s Counsel Ben Juratowich. It also refers obliquely to “the Minister who signed the DA,” Erwin Contreras, and whether his signature was authorized.
For its part, Committee Chair Janelle Chanona states that the Constitution sets the parameters of who can appear before the Committee.
