By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Yesterday’s Sitting of the House of Representatives ended in a tense exchange after members debated the Caribbean Development Bank Eighth Road Project Loan Motion. The motion seeks approval for over 34 million US dollars to rehabilitate 16 miles of the George Price Highway between Belize City and Hattieville.
The Opposition raised strong objections, focusing on the repayment period, overall cost, and what they described as a lack of transparency. Tracy Panton argued that the project represents 22 years of financial burden and noted that most Belizean students would finish school long before the debt is cleared. She also questioned the absence of detailed project information, stating that, based on her calculations, this may be the most expensive stretch of highway ever proposed in Belize.
Lee Mark Chang, Area Representative for Mesopotamia, added that the current road remains usable and questioned the need for such a large investment. He noted the lack of specifics regarding construction materials and technical details.
Minister for Infrastructure Development Julius Espat fired back, defending the project and accusing the Opposition of criticizing without reviewing the technical documents available at the Ministry. He emphasized that the George Price Highway is the most trafficked roadway in the country and a critical economic link between Belize City, Belmopan, and the wider nation. Espat insisted that feasibility studies, financial breakdowns, and engineering designs exist for anyone willing to review them.
