Opposition Leader slams PUP’s “million-dollar” convention, calls for campaign finance reform

By Zoila Palma:  Today, Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton issued a statement slamming the PUP for Sunday’s convention to select a Mayoral and councilor candidates for the 2027 municipal election.

“While families struggle to put food on the table, pay their bills and afford basic necessities, an estimated $1 million is being spent on a political convention. This is not just excessive, it is an urgent warning about whose interests our politics truly serves.

When will it truly be about the people of Belize, those who we say we wish to lead and to serve?

This is precisely why Belize urgently needs meaningful campaign finance reform,” Panton said.

Panton questioned where the finance is coming from for these campaigns.

“Who is bankrolling these extravagant political spectacles?

More importantly, what are they expecting in return?

Who is safeguarding our fragile democracy?

Who is confronting the decline of our productive sector and the relentless rise in the cost of living?

Who is holding public officials accountable for blatant corruption and the misuse of public resources?,” Panton questioned.

Panton reminded that “democracy is not a marketplace where power can be purchased. You cannot buy your way into legitimate governance. You must seek to earn the trust and confidence of the people.”
