By Aaron Humes: The Leader of the Opposition, Tracy Taegar Panton, has written to Prime Minister John Briceño, calling for immediate action in the investigation into the abduction of Joseph Budna. Panton demands transparency and accountability in the matter, citing concerns about fundamental rights and national sovereignty.
Panton demands the full and unredacted police report the Prime Minister got on Friday related to Budna’s detention, transport, and transfer be provided to the National Assembly. All available surveillance footage and body-worn camera recordings should be disclosed, she asks, with narrowly tailored redactions justified in writing where necessary for national security. A written preservation order should be issued to prevent destruction, alteration, or loss of relevant documents and evidence.
Panton demands that an independent investigative panel be established with full powers to compel documents and testimony, working within 30 days.
Finally, Panton demands the immediate removal of the Commissioner of Police Dr Richard Rosado, citing concerns about public trust in law enforcement. He has been sent on leave for 45 days.
Panton writes, “This matter touches on core constitutional guarantees, Belize’s international obligations, and the public’s trust in law enforcement. Transparency is indispensable. The Government must demonstrate that no individual or institution is above the law and that the rights of Belizean citizens are fully protected. I remain available to collaborate in good faith to ensure the investigation’s scope, independence, and credibility meet the public interest and international best practices.”
