By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Leader of the Opposition Tracy Taegar Panton is raising concerns about the government’s National Health Insurance expansion, questioning whether Belizeans are getting the full picture about how millions of dollars in public funds are being spent.
In a statement issued Wednesday, Panton argued that universal healthcare begins with strong primary healthcare services, but claimed many public healthcare facilities across Belize remain under-resourced and neglected.
According to Panton, public clinics and health centers are not being adequately expanded, equipped, or modernized despite the government’s push to broaden access to National Health Insurance services.
The Opposition Leader pointed to the government’s reported allocation of $75 million for NHI this year and called for greater transparency regarding how those funds are being distributed.
“We need to have the list of the facilities being contracted to provide services. We need to know what Government is paying for the services they are procuring,” Panton stated.
She also questioned the overall cost of the program, arguing that while government often highlights patient contributions and benefits, taxpayers deserve a clearer understanding of what is being paid behind the scenes.
Panton stressed that universal healthcare is important but warned that it should not come at the expense of accountability and transparency.
The government has consistently defended the expansion of NHI, describing it as a major step toward improving healthcare access for Belizeans nationwide.
The debate is expected to continue as the NHI program expands into additional communities and healthcare facilities across the country.
