By Aaron Humes: Rebutting the Prime Minister’s recent State of the Nation Address on social media, Leader of the Opposition Tracy Taegar-Panton labeled the address as “lame,” uninspired and lacking substance on pressing national issues at a time when citizens expect a meaningful discussion of the country’s challenges and achievements.

The Opposition Leader expressed congratulations to the 44 new Belizeans who received citizenship, but emphasized the glaring omissions in the Prime Minister’s speech regarding the struggles faced by ordinary Belizeans.

“The spiraling cost of living, is pushing many Belizean families to the brink of poverty. A failing public health system, leaving our people vulnerable and without quality, affordable care. Fuel prices at the pumps, among the highest in our region despite record-low global crude prices. Unregulated housing costs and skyrocketing rental fees, are crushing families and young professionals. The lack of housing solutions for the poor and affordable mortgage access for minimum-wage earners. Belize’s mounting external debt, a heavy yoke being strapped onto the shoulders of our future generations. Our sovereignty and territorial integrity are under siege, with citizens’ mistrust of national security agencies at an all-time high. Public institutions that have been politicized, that are under-resourced, and failing in their most basic duties to those who are most marginalized and vulnerable in our communities. Rogue elements in our security services, ruling through fear, brute force, and bullying tactics. International agreements signed in secrecy, undermining citizens’ right to privacy, environmental protections, and self-determination. Rampant corruption and cronyism in public office, widening the gap between the haves and the have-nots. A productive sector that is struggling to remain viable amidst diseases, the absence of new technological advances, and the high costs of doing business. The unbearable weight of taxation, is squeezing the very life out of working Belizeans and our young entrepreneurs. A judiciary that is agile, autonomous, and equipped to deliver justice in a timely manner,” the Opposition Leader remarked.

She added that the Prime Minister’s silence on these issues reflects a lack of credible plans to address the nation’s challenges. “Belizeans deserve leadership that will not shy away from the truth, that will not sweep failure under the rug, and that will not deliver hollow speeches at a time meant to inspire hope,” she asserted.

She finished by declaring, “Belizeans are awake and demanding change. Change is drawing near.”

Taegar-Panton is expected to make more history as the first female Leader of the Opposition to address Independence Day ceremonies in Belmopan on Sunday.
