By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: “This is unprecedented for the UDP,” Tracy Panton said recently as the UDP infighting continues.
On August 28, 2024, the Alliance for Democracy led by Albert Area Representative Tracy Panton issued a statement informing that it is aware of a UDP Executive meeting held on August 28 in which a motion was proposed by Shyne Barrow and passed by the fifteen members in attendance (only four were standard bearers) to declare that Tracy Panton, Patrick Faber, Beverly Williams, and John Saldivar have constructively resigned from the UDP.
“This has to be the most absurd motion that Shyne Barrow has proposed and passed through his handpicked CEC during his less than stellar time as Party Leader. No one can tell what is the effective purpose of this declaration as it falls short of expelling the senior members who have been on a crusade for upholding the democratic principles of the Party,” the alliance explained.
However, Tracy declared that she has not resigned from the Party and has no intention to do so while the other 3 senior members are expected to make a similar statement once the announcement is made at a press conference which Barrow is expected to host shortly.
This executive meeting was held following a letter by Williams requesting a convention and in an official response UDP Chairman Micheal Peyrefitte rejected the petition.
After that, the standard bearers said they will take whatever actions necessary.
Now, Panton is leading the Alliance for Democracy calling out UDP leader Shyne Barrow and the UDP for denying their request for a convention.
“This latest move by Shyne Barrow is viewed as an attempt to draw attention away from his many violations of the UDP Constitution in removing and installing standard bearers without the proper approval of the National Party Council as well as refusing to allow a Recall Convention duly called for by the required amount of delegates,” the alliance added.
As the opposition remains fragmented and infighting persists among factions vying to replace Barrow as leader, the UDP faces critical questions as parties prepare for the 2025 general elections. With internal divisions threatening its cohesion, can the UDP present a unified and viable opposition?
