By Zoila Palma: Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton says that the Opposition Parliamentarian Caucus calls for immediate and full disclosure from the Department of the Environment and the Chief Environmental Officer regarding the approval of the Silver Palms mega development on Ambergris Caye in one of Belize’s most sensitive environmental zones.
“Evidence shows that this project was approved in December 2024 under a Limited Level Environmental Study (LLES), a fast-track process that bypasses public consultation,” Panton said.
Panton says the Opposition questions:
“Why was this project not subjected to a full Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)?
Why were NGOs on the NEAC not informed?
Why were formal objections from the Fisheries Department and the Ministry of the Blue Economy ignored?”
The Opposition further demanded the immediate release of all documents related to the Silver Palms approval; a public explanation from the Chief Environmental Officer; a moratorium on any further work until a full EIA is done and shared publicly.
“Belize’s environment is not for sale.
We insist on accountability. We deserve disclosure. We continue to advocate for the protection of already fragile eco-systems,” Panton expressed.
