By Aaron Humes: The United Democratic Party (UDP) hinted at “a troubling pattern of preferential treatment that undermines the rule of law in our nation” as it relates to Minister of the Blue Economy and Disaster Risk Management, Andre Perez, after a bust of cocaine was made aboard a boat on Saturday morning in San Pedro Town.

The UDP claims that “[an] ordinary Belizean would face rigorous interrogation and likely legal charges in such a situation, [while] Minister Perez appears to receive immunity from the scrutiny and consequences that would befall any other citizen.”

Police have said they spoke to Perez after the discovery, who insisted that he hasn’t used that boat for a while and thus has no idea how 474 grams of the drug was stashed there.

The boat was docked at a boatyard for repairs. It has been there for the last six months and police only became alerted to the drugs after residents in the area reported that drug dealers have been using the area to stash drugs.

The UDP calls the Police’s handling of the situation a double standard that erodes public trust and raises questions of accountability.

Perez was previously suspended following an allegation of sexual assault by a female attorney and constituent, but no formal complaint was ever made.

The UDP contends that “In a free and just society, no one is above the law, regardless of their status. The UDP demands that the Minister of Police and the Commissioner of Police act impartially and uphold the principles of justice for all Belizeans. The integrity of our legal system depends on equal treatment and accountability for everyone.”
