OPINION: Belize must reclaim reason in our national conversations

Posted: Wednesday, May 7, 2025. 6:52 am CST.

By Horace Palacio: Thomas Sowell once said, “One of the painful signs of years of dumbed-down education is how many people are unable to make a coherent argument.” That statement is hitting close to home in Belize today.

Across social media, town halls, and even national debates, many Belizeans are falling into a troubling pattern—venting emotions, questioning motives, repeating slogans, and making bold claims, all without offering reasoned arguments or real solutions.

This is more than just noise—it’s a symptom of a deeper issue. When critical thinking and civil discourse disappear, so does progress. Belize faces serious challenges: crime is on the rise, schools and hospitals are underfunded, and trust in leadership is at an all-time low. These problems won’t be solved by shouting louder—they’ll be solved by thinking smarter.

We must revive a culture of reason. That means encouraging young Belizeans to debate ideas, not attack people. It means pushing for better education, not just in math or reading, but in how to think critically, analyze facts, and engage respectfully.

Let’s stop allowing emotion to replace evidence. Let’s demand more than slogans from our leaders—and from ourselves. Belize deserves better. And better begins with reason.
