By Aaron Humes: The official opening of the Legal Year takes place on Monday, January 20.
Traditionally, the event begins with an interfaith church service, which this year will be held at St John’s Cathedral on Albert Street.
The ceremonies will commence at 9 a.m. Following the service, attendees will participate in a procession to the High Court building on Treasury Lane. This will be followed by an Inspection of the Guard and a parade conducted by the Belize Police Department. The occasion will culminate with a Special Sitting of the Court, where Chief Justice Madam Louise Blenman will deliver the keynote address and officially declare the law year open.
Dignitaries expected to attend include the Governor-General Froyla Tzalam, Prime Minister John Briceño, and Leader of the Opposition Moses Barrow, among others. Additional remarks will be made by the President of the Bar Association and Attorney General Anthony Sylvestre.
As the legal fraternity and the judiciary prepare to embark on this new year, the focus remains on enhancing the justice system to better serve the people of Belize.
