By BBN Staff: A major turn of events occurred earlier this week in the Cayo District as the power struggle between Tracy Taeger Panton’s Alliance for Democracy and Shyne Barrow intensifies. UDP insiders tell Breaking Belize News (BBN) that former Area Representative, Dr. Omar Figueroa, has switched allegiance from Panton to Shyne Barrow. Figueroa’s decision follows a meeting held on 23rd October, 2024, between UDP Leader Shyne Barrow, UDP Deputy Chairman Alberto August and Dr. Omar Figueroa and the Cayo North Constituency Committee.
In a social media post on the UDP Facebook page and on BBN’s own Facebook page, a photo was showcased depicting a supportive stance for Barrow from Figueroa and his Constituency Committee. In the caption to the post, Shyne Barrow stated “Great meeting with the next Area Representative for UDP Cayo North, brother Omar and his Executive Committee to plan victory for the General Elections!” With Figueroa’s support, Shyne Barrow enjoys firm support from the four (4) electoral divisions in Western Cayo, namely Cayo West, Cayo North, Cayo Northeast and Cayo Central.
Back in late October 2024, Figueroa wrote a letter supporting Panton over Barrow, and in his letter, he advocated for a national leadership convention to address the split within the party. While the convention was never held, Figueroa’s request was clearly an attempt to ensure that the Alliance for Democracy and the UDP did not end up as opposing parties in the upcoming general elections.
With the Alliance endorsing Lee Mark Chang to run against Shyne Barrow in Mesopotamia, and the UDP placing Jose Luis Uc Espat to run against Panton in Albert, it is anyone’s guess if the icicle between the factions will be resolved prior to the 2025 general elections which will be called anytime now by Prime Minister John Briceno.
