Office of the Ombudsman Opens Investigation into Incident at Belize Central Prison

The Office of the Ombudsman has initiated an investigation into the incident of 12 August 2025 at the Belize Central Prison involving Mr. Nyere Parchue. 

This review will examine, among other things, whether the standards of fairness, proportionality, and other administrative protocols and processes were adhered to when responding to an attempted escape, including the use of force, the policies and training that govern such responses, and the medical care provided thereafter. 

The Ombudsman reiterates that: 

“Our role is to ensure accountability and continuous improvement in the administration of public services. This investigation is being conducted impartially and independently. We will follow the facts and the law, and we welcome the cooperation of all parties.” 

Formal requests for information and evidence preservation have been issued to the Kolbe  Foundation (Belize Central Prison), the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Belize Police Department. The Office will coordinate with all relevant parties to avoid prejudice to any ongoing criminal inquiries. No further comment on the merits will be made while the investigation is ongoing.
