By Aaron Humes: Visiting Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Albert Ramdin, is concluding his visit to Belize as part of Diplomatic Week.
Addressing reporters today, he maintained that regardless of provocation on either side, Belize and Guatemala must continue to adhere to the 2005 Confidence Building Agreement brokered by the OAS.
He lamented that biodiversity had been damaged in multiple incursions and noted that up to 500 incidents over the years had been reported in the OAS-enforced Adjacency Zone.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Francis Fonseca added that Belize is disappointed by the rhetoric coming out of Guatemala, which he said does not reflect the discussions between the countries at diplomatic level.
Fonseca added that while the OAS may prefer the request for a Sarstoon River Protocol to come from both countries and Guatemala appears to be ruling it out, Belize still seeks some sort of cooperation on how to manage the area until the International Court of Justice resolves the claim in the next few years.
