By Aaron Humes: Chief of the Organization of American States (OAS) Electoral Observer Mission to Belize, Maricarmen Plata, has described today’s proceedings as “peaceful, free and fair” so far.
The OAS team arrived for its fourth observer mission to a Belizean election, but it’s first since 2015 over the weekend. It has met with various stakeholders to review electoral processes, technology and other critical issues and will issue a preliminary report in the coming days.
Plata says that while it will not be specific, the report will take official notice of both a lack of campaign finance laws and a failure to have nearly equal electoral divisions, with the 31 divisions in similar proportion of voters to 2015. Court cases compelling government to halt the election and proceed with redistricting failed at the first hurdle with no injunction being granted by the High Court.
Plata’s team is spread out across the country and is available for those wishing to make complaints about the process where necessary.
