By Breaking Belize News Staff: A San Pedro resident accused of bigamy had his early guilty plea rejected on Friday after the High Court ruled that he should first receive legal advice.
Edermillo Javier Azebedo—also known as Javier Garcia and Javier Edelmiro—was indicted on a single charge of bigamy and appeared before the High Court around 2:00 p.m. When asked to plead, Azebedo told the court, “Well ah guilty because I already done it.”
However, Justice Candace Nanton declined to accept the plea, explaining that Azebedo is unrepresented. The judge said she preferred that he consult with an attorney before entering a guilty plea, to ensure he fully understands the legal implications.
The indictment alleges that Azebedo, knowing that a marriage subsisted between himself and one woman still went through a marriage ceremony with another woman.
As a result, the case was adjourned to Thursday, February 26, 2026, to allow Azebedo time to seek legal representation. He remains unrepresented at this stage.
