By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize National Celebrations Commission is inviting nominations for the Belize@44 Creative and Cultural Excellence Awards, set to take place during National Celebrations Month in September. This initiative honours visionary artists, performers, and cultural figures who have dedicated their talents to shaping Belize’s national identity.
The BNCC said any community, group, or individual can nominate Belizeans who have three to five years or more of outstanding contributions in music, dance, film, visual arts, storytelling, and cultural preservation. Self-nominations are not accepted.
Award Categories
· Andy Palacio Award: Belizean music
· Leela Vernon Award: Cultural heritage & community action
· Don Elijio Panti Award: Indigenous knowledge preservation
· Zee Edgell Award: Literary arts
· Beverly Smith Lopez Award: Acting in theatre & film
· George Gabb Award: Visual arts & design
· Rosita Baltazar Award: Dance

To submit a nomination, send a 200-word profile detailing the nominee’s work and impact, along with supporting visuals, to nationalcelebrations@nichbelize.org by May 30, 2025.

At the beginning of April, the BNCC held its first meeting to plan the 44th Anniversary of Belize’s Independence. Chaired by Hon. Francis Fonseca, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade, Culture, and Immigration, this session marked the start of preparations for a season filled with patriotism, culture, and national pride.
